Severe shortage of vegetables throughout the country

President of the All Ceylon Economic Centers and Manning Traders Association Aruna Shantha Hettiarachchi states that there will be a severe shortage of vegetables in the country in the next three months or so.
He also said that long queues for vegetables would be seen all over the country.
He further says that due to the lack of infrastructure facilities 50% of the small scale vegetable farmers have withdrawn from cultivation.
He said that 60% of the total vegetable farmers in the country are small scale farmers and 20% are medium scale and commercial vegetable farmers.
It is also pointed out that the withdrawal of 50% of small scale vegetable farmers from cultivation has contributed to the collapse of the vegetable market.
He said that to prevent this situation, the authorities should take immediate steps to provide the necessary infrastructure (seed fertilizer, agrochemical fuel) for cultivation at an affordable price, without any shortage of fuel for transportation and distribution of produce. (colombotimes.lk)
