මම ඉපදිලා තියෙන්නේ නොවැම්බර් 6 දවසක රාත්‍රියේ 8.15ට වගේලු. කුරුණෑගල මහ රෝහලේ. ඒ දවසෙ වුණු සිදුවීම් දෙකක් අම්මා සඳහන් කරලා තියෙනවා. එකක් මාව ඉපදුනාම මගේ කිරිඅම්මා මාව බලන්න ආපු වෙලාවෙ මගේ ඇඳේ තව දරුවෙක් ඉඳලා තියෙනවා. ඒ දවසෙම ඉපදුණු ගැහැනු දරුවෙක්.
ඉතින් කිරිඅම්මා ගිහින් මුලින්ම ඒ දරුවාව තමයි භාරගෙන තියෙන්නේ. ඒ මොහොතෙ අම්මා මාව ලැබුණු අලුත අමාරුවෙන් කිව්වලු ‘අම්මේ එයා නෙවෙයි අනිත් කෙනා’ කියලා. ඉතින් මට ඒ අවස්ථාව මැවිලා පේනවා ඒ සිදුවීම ගැන විස්තර කරද්දී. මගේ හැම උපන්දිනයකම ඒ සිදුවීම ගැන අම්මා තවමත් මතක් කරනවා. හරි රසවත් දේවල් තමයි ඉතින් ඒවා. ඒ වගේම ඒ දවසෙ මහා වැස්සක් වැහැලා කුරුණෑගල යටවෙලා. මාව එක්කගෙන යන්න ආපු වාහනේ නැවැතිලා ගංවතුරට අහුවෙලා. ගෙදර සහෝදර සහෝදරියො එකතු වෙලා වාහනය තල්ලු කරලා ලොකු ක්‍රියාන්විතයකින් තමයි මාව ගෙදර ගෙනල්ලා තියෙන්නේ.”
දඟ වැඩ එහෙම කරද්දී අම්මා කියන්නෙ නැද්ද ‘මේ ළමයා ඇත්තටම මාරුවෙලා’ කියලා?
“එහෙම නම් කියලා නැහැ. නමුත් මම ඇත්තටම හරිම දඟයි. අම්මා ඉතින් අපිට තරවටු කරලා සැර කරලා තියෙනවා. මොකද අපි ගම්වලනෙ හැදුණේ. ඒ නිසා සමහර වෙලාවට ළමයින්ට නුසුදුසු බරපතළ විදියෙ දඟ වැඩ කරලා තියෙනවා. ඒ සමහර සෙල්ලම්වල අනතුරුද‌ායක බව නොදැන. ඒ වෙලාවට ඉතින් ඕනෑ තරම් ගුටි කාලා තියෙනවා. ඒ කාලෙ මගෙ දඩබ්බරකම් නිසාම මාව පාලනය කරගන්න මගේ පවුල්වල මගේ සහෝදර සහෝදරියො බොරු කියලා තියෙනවා මාව බෝක්කුවක් යට දිමියො කකා ඉද්දී මගේ අම්මා, තාත්තා මාව හාද‌ාගන්න ගෙනල්ලා තියෙන්නේ කියලා. ඒ කතාව කියද්දී මට හරියට තරහා යනවා. දුකත් හිතෙනවා. ඒත් ඒ දේ තමයි මට කිව්වෙ දඟ වැඩ කරද්දී. අපේ පවුල් පරම්පරාවෙ බාලයා මම තමයි. අනිත් ඔක්කොම මට වඩා අවුරුදු 10, 15, 20 වැඩිමල් පිරිසක්. ඉතින් ඒ නිසා හැමෝගෙම ඒ ආදරේ තිබුණේ මට තමයි.”

“උපන්දිනේ කියලාම නෑ අපි හැමද‌ාම සෙල්ලම් කරන්න එකට එකතු වෙනවා. මට හොඳම යාළුවො 12 දෙනෙක් හිටියා. අදටත් ඒ අය එහෙමම ඉන්නවා. ගැහැනු පිරිමි පොදුවෙ හිටියා. ඉතින් අපිට උපන්දින කියලා විශේෂ වුණේ නැහැ. දෛනිකව කරන ක්‍රියාවලිය තමයි සිද්ධ වෙන්නෙ. සරුංගල් යවනවා, පොල් ගස් කැපුවම ඒවාගෙන් රෝද දෙකක් කපලා මැද්දෙන් පොල්ලක් දවටලා ඒකට කරුවක් ගහලා පුංචි කරත්තයක් වගේ එකක් හද‌ාගන්නවා. ඒකට කිව්වෙ රෝල් කොට කියලා. ඒවා පදින්න තමයි ලොකුම ආසාව. ඉතින් උපන්දිනේ දවසටත් පාසල් නොයා ඒ වගේ සෙල්ලම් කර කරා ඉන්න තමයි වැඩි කැමැත්ත තිබුණෙ. සමහර උපන්දින දවස්වලට කලින් දවසෙ කතා වෙනවා ඉස්කෝලෙ නොගිහින් සෙල්ලම් කරන්න එමු, ඇළේ නාමු, කුරුම්බා කඩමු, ඒ වගේ ඇට්ටර වැඩ ගැන. ඒත් ඉතින් ඉස්කෝලෙ නොගිහින් ඉන්න ලැබුණේ නම් නැහැ. ඉස්කෝලෙටත් ඉතින් ඒ වගේ දවස්වලට කැවුම්, කිරිබත් එහෙම ගෙනිච්චා මතකයි.”
